The East Bay Career Advancement Academies, a joint workforce development initiative led by the Contra Costa and Peralta Community Districts, are pleased to announce their first regional workforce and education conference will be held in the City of Richmond on October 7th. This event is open to college administrators and faculty, public and private workforce agencies, economic development agencies, community based organizations, and regional and local policy-makers. Lunch is included. The agenda includes a morning plenary session exploring the regional economy and the response of community colleges to the educational and workforce needs of low income adults in the East Bay and afternoon workshops on best practices in workforce development and education that target low income communities.

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Paul Alivisatos, Director-Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (lunch keynote)
  • Linda Collins, Executive Director-Career Ladders Project
  • Karen Engel, Executive Director-East Bay Economic Development Alliance

Congressman George Miller, Representative for the 7th Federal Congressional District has been invited to attend and we await confirmation.

Special Topics for the afternoon workshops include:

  • Basic Skills and Workforce Development: How math, English, and digital literacy help low income residents access careers in high growth high wage industries,
  • Effective teamwork in workforce development: Strategies for faculty, counselors, case managers that can improve workforce and education programs,
  • Partnerships and Leveraging Resources: Best practices in partnerships between colleges, the workforce system, and community based organizations that increase sustainability and student success,

We ask that attendees RSVP by October 1st and that they indicate whether they will be attending the morning session, afternoon session, or both. Morning attendees are invited to stay for lunch provided by the students of the Culinary Arts program at Contra Costa College and hear a special talk by Dr. Paul Alivisatos, Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
