The District

The Contra Costa Community College District (CCCCD) first opened its doors in 1949. It is one of the largest multi-college community college districts in California. CCCCD serves a population of 1,019,640 people, and its boundaries encompass all but 48 of the 734-square-mile land area of Contra Costa County. The Contra Costa Community College District includes three community college – Contra Costa College, Diablo Valley College and Los Medanos College. The District Office is located in historic downtown Martinez.

Diablo Valley College

DVC Campus PhotoDiablo Valley College is one of three publicly supported two-year community colleges in the Contra Costa Community College District. The larger of DVC’s two campuses is located in Pleasant Hill, and the newer San Ramon Campus serves the south county in Dougherty Valley.

The college's student body reflects the growing multiculturalism and diversity found in California. The college employs more than 1,100 faculty and staff, and serves nearly 22,000 students each semester at its 100-acre campus. Diablo Valley College has had a significant social, cultural and economic impact on the Bay Area. It enjoys a reputation as one of California's premier community colleges with annual transfer rates to the CSU and UC systems among the top five in the state; likewise, DVC's certificate-granting programs maintain impressive success and placement statistics. Because of its reputation for excellence and the breadth of its programs, DVC attracts a large percentage of students from outside its service area, including a substantial and growing number of international students.

Diablo Valley College - San Ramon Campus

The San Ramon Campus is an officially recognized "Center", providing educational services for those who live and work in the San Ramon Valley, and now serves over 5,000 students of all ages and interests each semester. San Ramon offers general education courses, which allow students to fulfill all their lower division pre-transfer requirements. In addition, San Ramon's extensive computer-training curriculum provides hands-on experience using hardware and software with business applications.

The Position

The President of Diablo Valley College plans, develops, administers, evaluates and supports instructional offerings, curriculum, co-curricular activities, staffing, and student services; directs, reviews, and recommends changes to campus facilities, including construction, repair, and maintenance; oversees the development and submission of a college budget for approval by the District and Board; directs operations within the provisions of the approved budget; and implements equal opportunity programs and hiring policies.

The President of Diablo Valley College serves as a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet with responsibilities of implementing and administering Board policies; reviewing and recommending legislation to benefit both District and college programs; participating at Districtwide, local, and state levels of community college planning and instructional articulation; and representing the college at social, professional, and political events to maintain continuous community relations and develop fund- raising capabilities.

  • An articulate and politically astute advocate, responsive to the needs of the community and business and industry, with a solid understanding of legislative processes and issues.

  • A person who has successfully led facilities planning, development, renovation, and construction.

  • A leader with demonstrated success in developing and motivating diverse faculty, staff and management to meet the needs of 21st century students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university; AND,

  • A minimum of five years of senior-level management experience.

  • Three years of full-time teaching or student services experience (Current or prior experience as a college president or the equivalent may be used in lieu of other management, teaching or student services requirements).

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diversity in the workplace and educational environment.

Desirable Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate or other equivalent terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution in a recognized discipline, or substantial progress in attainment.

  • Senior-level management experience, preferably in a community college environment.

  • Demonstrated experience in community involvement and institutional advocacy, including fund-raising or other resource development.

  • College faculty experience in a classroom or non-classroom capacity.
